Ingredients

1 ⅓ cups butter
1 ½ cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
4 tablespoon milk
4 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt

For the icing
1 tablespoon softened butter
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Method

Mix together the butter, sugar, milk and vanilla using an electric mixer. Mix until smooth. Then stir in eggs. Combine well.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.
Add in the flour, a little at a time. Divide dough in half. Wrap each dough half in plastic wrap then put the dough balls into the refrigerator to chill for at least an hour.
When dough is ready, preheat oven to 375F degrees. Spray a couple baking sheets with nonstick cooking spray or line with parchment paper.
Start rolling out your dough.  Use lots of flour, on your work space and rolling pin.  Bake for 8 minutes, checking every so often...some batches took 9 to 10 minutes.  I think because some cookies were a bit thicker than others.
To make the icing, mix the butter sugar milk and vanilla.  Whisk until smooth, adding more powdered sugar to thicken if needed.  Then add gel food coloring if youre doing it up!

I made these cookies for my 20 year High School reunion and they were a hit! Our colors were black, white and yellow.  So I made the icing in three batches.  If you are making black royal icing, def do this last!
