I found this recipe in my Nana's Betty crocker recipe card box. It was cut from a 1997 Pittsburgh Post Gazette. I treasure the thought that my Nana carefully held the paper, and cut this perfect square. I can often see my Nana's hands. They flutter behind my eyes anytime I bake a cake, or knead dough or simply use a rolling pin. I can look down to see my Nana's hands, grizzled with time, shiny with olive oil, fragrant with vanilla, small bits of dough stuck in her silver ring, and be almost guided by the thought of them. Calmed by the thought of my Nana's hands.
The recipe is great and I recall eating her stuffed mushrooms, but I think I love more the idea of holding a piece of paper that she held.
My nana is alive but riddled with Alzheimers. Living her days without the faintest idea that I exist, but I exist and I remember.
